A new album
Ta Nisia (“The Islands”), the second album by Estudiantina of Melbourne, presents a more mature and cohesive evolution of their sound, blending traditional Smyrneika and rebetiko influences with richer, more expansive arrangements. Inspired both by the Greek islands and the idea of separate yet connected emotional “islands,” the album explores themes of migration, identity, and belonging, reflecting the experience of the Greek diaspora in a contemporary, multicultural context. While staying rooted in tradition through instruments like bouzouki, oud, and violin, the group moves beyond simple revivalism, offering a nuanced and expressive interpretation that feels both authentic and forward-looking.
